Rich Mullins Legacy - 9/30/97
Next John 3:30 Letters

Dear Everyone, =)

Wow! We serve a mighty God and He is worthy to be praised. My eyes shall look to Him in the mornings and give Him praise.

I love what David Livingstone said, "Whatever way my life may be spent as best to promote the glory of our gracious God, I feel anxious to do it..." It doesn't matter how God wants to use me as long as I can promote His glory!

This thought of the week is in honor and in memory of Rich Mullins who desired to leave a legacy of compassion.

Rich Mullins speaking:

"I hope I would leave a legacy of Joy and real compassion. Because I believe that there is a great joy in compassion. I don't think you can know joy apart from caring deeply about people. Caring enough about people that you actually do something.

But I have a feeling, if my life is motivated by my ambition to leave a legacy, what I probably will leave is a legacy of ambition. But if my life is motivated by the power of Spirit in me, if I live in the awareness of the indwelling Christ, if I allow His presents to guide my actions and to guide my motives, then, that is the only time we will really leave a great legacy.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the spirit is spirit. My ambition to be a good guy is a fleshly ambition and when Christ calls us to take up our cross and follow Him for a lot of us what that means is to lay down our vices and cling to our virtue. Unless God is Lord of our virtue, our virtue becomes dangerous to us and dangerous to the people around us. I think - that when Christ tells us to take up our cross - what He means is that not only die to what ever vices that are in your life, which He will eventually kill out, but also die to what ever virtues that are in your life.

Your life is not valuable because you are a great speaker, your life is not valuable because you are a generous person, your life is not valuable because any of that. If we empty ourselves of everything and allow God to be present, then it is no longer us, it's Him and then it becomes a spiritual thing. Then whatever is born of spirit is spirit and that's when I think Christianity really begins to make sense." (Taken from Rich Mullins Pursuit of a Legacy - Video)

Question:

  1. What type of legacy do you want to leave behind?
  2. What is the motivation behind that legacy that you want to leave behind?
  3. Are you emptying yourself of everything and allowing God to be present in everything you do?
  4. Is God the Lord of not only your vices but also your virtues?

I like what Rich Mullins says at the end - "That's when I think Christianity really begins to make sense."

Know that you are in my prayers. We serve a great God and He loves each of you very much. Keep pressing on toward Him who loves you very much!!!

God is Good All The Time!
"He Must become greater, I must become Less"
